Comparisons to Thursdays Post

I don't get called out a lot. However, with my comparisons yesterday, a few of you asked me to put my $$ where my mouth is.

ELO's "The Rain is Falling"

Satisfied?

...Why the Intertubes are Awesome

...because of treats like this guy. He's Bo, Yo. Asking the awesome questions, like: "What the hell is a GSpot?"

Bo Burnham -- "I'm Bo, Yo." Too awesome.

Enjoy. Greatest. Rapper. Ever.

Warren Zevon -- "The Hockey Song (Hit Somebody)."

Gotta love someone who was born in "Big Beaver."

My Last Night On Earth

...Kinda sounds like this. From the new Green Day album 21st Century Breakdown (which isn't as good as AI or Dookie, but still a fine effort -- Can't wait for the mashups), "My Last night on Earth."

There are a lot of nods to MCR in the composition of the album, as well as lifts from Beatles, ELO, etc. Stylistically, this was a superior album, but may not make the commercial success of Idiot.

Good day.

A So-Cal 2fer.

From So-Cal Punk Rock Gods Social D... "The Story of my Life," and "Ball and Chain." I couldn't put up one without the other.

"The Story of My Life."

"Ball and Chain."

"...You can run all your life and not go anywhere..."

Darn It...

...Another 80s song.

However, this is a bit of a different tune... Piano driven. Not what you think, since this is from the incomparable Joe Jackson. Piano playing has something to it. And this song does as well. Enjoy "Steppin Out."

Memorial Day

What else could it have been on this day? Billy Joel's "Goodnight Saigon."

Too all that have ever served: "Hoo-Rah." You are appreciated, revered and missed.

Ok, I Lied.

Bwahahaha... the "Time Warp."

Even more Hellish, it's being performed by The Chipmunks. And God forgive me, it really sounds good.

Well, since we are already there, and my daughter will love it, I'm adding another tune. "The Girls of Rock and Roll." Sadly, I may have been the only 18 year old with this album. Nothing made my car move faster. Off the movie/soundtrack The Chipmunk Adventure.

And God Said, "Let There Be... Lips!

Yeah, maybe two of you know what is coming next.

In 1977, the Midnight Movies all around America showed the 1975 show The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was a rite of passage, one of which is still done today. People act out the show on the floor under the screen, while the audience shouts things at pre-determined times. No one really tells new persons (virgins) what do to or expect, which makes going back again and again an enjoyable treat.

So, enjoy the "Midnight Double Feature." Be glad I didn't introduce you to the "Time Warp."

Lights out, virgins.

A Little Bit of Industrial Dance For You

I have a few songs to start off your weekend. The first one is "Faster Kill Pussycat (featuring Brittany Murphy)" from Paul Oakenfold. Definitely the tamest song of the lot.

This next one is a little harder. KMFDM's "Juke Joint Jezebel."

And one more in the same vein: "Sex on Wheels" from My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult.

Hard to imagine that these things were ever played in nightclubs, eh?

We are Going to Dance, and Have Some Fun!

This song is awesome. Hip beat, catchy lyrics, and it packs the dancefloor with hot girls. They played this right after midnight, NY eve 1991 at a club I happened to be at in SD. Nothing like 70-degree winters to make Winter Break an awesome time.

From the World Clique album, Deee-Lite's "Grove is in the Heart."

Sing it, baby.

I had another song on the queue, but this made me laugh. Apologies to all the kids. Reel Big Fish's "Another F.U. Song."

Leave Me Alone...

...Yeah, for some reason, this is applicable. Off the album Bad comes one of the more interesting and prophetic songs from the King of Pop. The video is a surreal mis-mash of images both real and imagined, some coming from the tabloid headlines of the day.

That, and I'm in a poor mood. I need some veg time. Not a vacation, but a couple of days of "me time."

The Dumbest Song in the World

True. It's this stupid song. The problem is, this song has a great bass line, as well as excellent use of horns. I can't even listen to more than a minute of it. The lyrics are asinine, as well as the spelling of bananas. Really, why? Who the heck wants to hear it? I'd rather pay for cats to mate under my bedroom window.

Enjoy. Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl." This would be an awesome torture.
Strap a person in a chair.
Play the song at full volume 100+ times.
Break the person's eardrums with a pencil, hereby enabling this stupid song as the last thing they ever hear.
Watch the hapless individual go mad within 2 days.

Yup, "Hollaback Girl." Worse than waterboarding.

Next Year

By the Foo Fighters... "Next Year." There is a really incredible acoustic version of this song somewhere out there, but this one is quite nice as well.

Have a great Sunday.

Animalympics...

... a few of you out there may have seen this movie. Done in 1979, the movie was a parody over the hype of the Olympics at the time, and the cold war posturing that ensued... denying the ability of athletes to compete as was natural against all the best in the world.

The interesting thing was one of the athletes in the story chose his sport over all other vocations. At the end of the chase, all he has was his prize, only to lose out on something far greater.

I wonder if I am not the same. Interesting.

From the movie Animalympics, Graham Gouldman's "Love's Not For Me."

Robotech!

Another Japanese Post. *sigh* Don't worry, I don't have many of these.

Robotech was a force in the 80s. America was hit with it somewhat late, 1985, versus the surge that saw it in Japan in 1984. It was such a hit over there (called Macross) that it was quickly dubbed into English by Harmony Gold, and combined with two other tales (Southern Cross and Mospeda) to form 85 episodes that we consider The Robotech Saga.

It was such a big hit that Macross had an entire summer devoted to it in Japan. Yes, Japan, the short-attention-span-anime country. Mecha, albums, concerts, even gala events showing the complete 36-episode arc (only 36 episodes made up Macross) were thrown weekly. The music ranged from Neoclassical (as evidenced by the Opening Credits) to popular ("Stagefright" and "We will Win") both had chart presences. Interesting.

So, thanks to Double Friday, here are a couple of snippets. Enjoy.

Robotech Opening by Ulpio Minucci

The hated Lynn Minmei song "Stagefright." They played this for about 15 episodes. It made you want to throw up your shoes.

And the much better "We Will Win."

Nice Sound, Stupid Lyrics

M83's "Graveyard Girl." It starts off sounding like 80s Cure or The Smiths, and I enjoyed it for a brief time. Breathy vocals, insistent drum, whaling guitar.

But the lyrics are idiotic.

"...I'm fifteen years old, and I feel that it's already too late to live, don't you?"

Jeez. This is the reason why people had such disdain for disaffected goths. But at least then, we also had "Master and Servant." Such promise, wasted with moronic lyrics.

A Fun One

Here is the Gorillaz, playing "Clint Eastwood." What makes this band awesome is the fact that this band is completely virtual. That's right, the band doesn't exist... but they throw one heck of a concert. Wrap your heads around that, kids.

Too Many Things are Precious

...And my Daughter is foremost to me. She makes me smile, laugh and cry. Truly, she is a joy of joys. But of course, I do miss my car.

Back from Vacation tomorrow, dear reader. Until then, enjoy Depeche Mode's, "Precious."

Giants? In the Sky!

Wow, I have never deluged you with a number from a true Musical yet. From Sondheim's Into the Woods, we have "Giants in the Sky." A small musical re-telling of Jack's adventures in the Giant's castle.

If you haven't seen the whole thing performed, it's quite a treat. Difficult to sing, for the range really stretches a tenor. But if you can do it, it's an excellent accomplishment that may make you feel invincible. Enjoy.

Back when Videos Ruled...

Since it's Double Friday, I have a couple of fun ones for you. First up, the Cars, with "You Might Think." Great video. Kitschy pop-crap, but who cares. It was fun.

Next up, the king of Cheesy 80s songs, the Bangles with "Eternal Flame." Yeah, I should be shot for this one.

Have a fun weekend! I'm going to work on my tan.

Gluten Glieben Glauchen Globen

You know, it's better to burn out than fade away. Def Leppard's "Rock of Ages." even then, the percussion work was kinda minimal.

We need a little hair band today. Long live rock and roll.

Who are these Guys???

Well, they aren't Nina Simone, but they do "Gin House Blues" so very well. From 1967, Amen Corner does a cover of Nina's classic tune.

Of course, I'm not drinking, but with what is going on around here, I should be.

Hear Me..

...In the Harmony. Harry Connick Jr, off the We are in Love album. Backing vocals are by Take6, a great gospel acapella group, fabulous and dynamic in thier own right. Paired, beautiful music happens. Expecially the closing chord. Turn it up.

Additionally, I'm really liking Yahoo Music now. Most artists will allow you to embed from here rather than YouTube. Anyway... have a great Sunday. I'm off to a donut and a coffee.

Ain't no Sunshine When She's Gone

The great Freddie King. As we close out the Funk week, I feel compelled to throw this one up there. A live version of "Ain't no Sunshine." More Blues than Funk, but who cares? There is no sun today.

The song reminds me of sitting around with a coffee on a rainy day. To me, the perfect song for today. I'm feeling quite melancholy.

A Sad Song

A tough week. Ending it on a down note.

Earth, Wind and Fire, "After the Love is Gone."

Actually, I can't do that... this is funk week. So, play that funky music, Wild Cherry...

Peace,

PS -- This just cheered me up. What can I say? I have a strange fascination with all things Fight Club.
