'70s Elvis!

Elvis Costello. Apologies to those of you who thought that I was going to play "The King." Nothing could have been further from the truth. There are two types of people in this world, Beatles fans, and Elvis Fans. I am the former. That does not mean that I won't play Elvis, or even listen to him... but it's not the first pick.

Elvis Costello, on the other hand, could be a first pick on a few days. Hip, tight sounds. Fun lyrics. Horn sections. Twangy Guitar. Hard drum beats.

What's not to like? No stupid Vegas shows with white jumpsuits, thats for sure.

Enjoy Elvis Costello's, "Living in Paradise." From the 1978 album This Year's Model. I definitely did.

"...You're already looking for another fool like me..." Awesome.

Clique, or Click?

Good Charlotte's "The Click."

This was the title track to the MTV cartoon "Undergrads." 12 episodes, about the first year of college with 4 different friends going to separate locations, trying to cope. Totally underrated, doomed to one season.

If you can find it, watch it. It will totally remind you of aspects of your college experience, and hopefully not all of it.

The song is poppy alternative, but somewhat catchy. Holds a bit more for me since I loved the show.

Happy Monday!

Bluegrass Gin and Juice

An excellent song from The Gourds. Snoop's "Gin and Juice." Truly a great song, enjoy it. The harmonics are wonderful, as well as the banjo. Sunday morning is ripe for good banjo music.

Going on Auto-pilot for this weekend. New Found Glory doing a cover of Go West's "King of Wishful Thinking."

Trying to relax, getting away from the keyboard this weekend. L8r.

What Did You Expect?

Only the best for the demise of the King of Pop. Two of the better videos with unsung good songs.

"Remember the Time"

"Dirty Diana" (one of the best concert footages around)

and a classic: "Rock with You." Thank God he learned to dance after this.

MJ, you will be missed. You totally rocked.

Paradise...

...By the Dashboard Light. Never had a song playing in a bar evoke such memories. Such a horrible song, but at age 21, it spoke to you in a way that only innuendo and 10+ beers can do.

But never, ever lip-sync the play-by-play. It just makes you look like a retard.

"Paradise by the Dashboard Light," by Meatloaf. Enjoy your Thursday, children.

A Little Vocal for You

Wow, after the last two, we need a change of pace. Class up the joint, as it were.

Ella and Nat, with "It's All Right with Me." Makes you long for a time machine.

A Morality Tale for the Internet Age

Seriously, it turns to awesome about a minute-and-a-half in. Give it time.

BTW, don't do things on Redbull late at night.

Meow! The tune is "You Make My Dreams Come True," by Hall and Oates.

Giving Acapella a Bad Name

DO NOT WATCH.

There are many things that put off people towards acapella. The fact that it turns normal people into uber-nerds is a side-effect.

I like acappella. Seriously, it's really an unsung (*heh*) genre of musical ability. Harmonies, layers, vocal percussion... it's really quite cool. However, when once sees something akin to what is below, one has to ponder all the wedgies that came before.

Seriously, I want to perform one now. Kudos, Corey Vidal, you just went viral.

I warned you.

Father's Day Post

Since I'm a Dad... this one was kind of a cop out, but it was really funny. I also didn't want to play something lame like "Cats in the Cradle." Ultimate suck.

Happy fathers day to you and yours!

C'Mon E!

A great seduction song. But not necessarily the one that will be the most successful. Lagwagon's "E Dagger."

Also a great driving song. My daughter concurs. Apologies for the late post.

"New" is Relative...

... but new stuff I'm trying to expose you to this week. We have had good, bad, covers, and mashups. Now on to the really weird stuff (but still good).

Here is Pain... a Swedish Music Project, covering ELO's "Here is the News (an excellent song off the Time album)." Love it or hate it. Seriously, this is an excellent cover, from a suprisingly good band. Not available in the states (or on iTunes), but it can be had or listened to over the internet.

How about some Gypsy Punk? Gogol Bordello's "Start Wearing Purple." Amazing video, fun tune.

I had one more, but blogger kept killing the post. Enjoy your weekend!

"New" Covers a Lot of Ground...

...Including Mashups. Love the good mashup, and Party Ben seems to be the king. Vampire Weekend, T.I and Rhianna, with "Live Your Life, Punk."

And another one, since I don't know how long this video will last out there:
"Let There Be Love / Beethoven Lockdown." Kanye West, Soulwax, Walter Murphy. Amazing. New take on the same sounds.

Yeah, I cheated. At least it's not acapella. Maybe tomorrow we can get into a cover.

One last one... the video cracked me up. Beyonce and The Andy Griffith Theme. "Single Ladies (in Mayberry)."

All hail Party Ben. I may have to hit SF next month for the next Bootie Party.

New == Suck.

Ok kids, this is what I mean.

Good band, Seether, attempts a new take at a George Michael song. Big, massive, epic FAIL.

Enjoy or cringe to "Careless Whisper."

Now I need to swab my ears out with bleach.

Where is the New Stuff?

I have been starting to get a lot of people asking about new stuff.

Just because it's new doesn't mean it's good. For this week, however, I will try.

Every once in a while, we have the juxtaposition of the two. Not terribly new, but new enough for me is Vampire Weekend. These New England chaps seem to have something cool and interesting. Have a listen to "Oxford Comma" and let me know.

Not only is the album pretty cool, the band's name rocks.

Gone Going...

...I think this speaks to my mind. However, the lyrics belie that. This is a pretty good fan video, by the way. Gotta give props to the persons on the work and time taken. Very cool. "Gone Going" by the Black Eyed Peas.

Listen to the lyrics children, killing yourself to get the things you want may not be the best thing in the world. Respect.

...What's worse, is your soul already gone...

An Epic Homage of Epic Proportion

So good, Epic was needed twice. "Trapped in the Closet" by R. Kelly was a "hip-hopera" in 2005, kinda known for it's repetitive melody and languid story that was told.

This is better. Weird Al's "Trapped in the Drive-Thru."

Enjoy your Saturday!

Double dose of Huh?

So, I was sitting at the Park and I hear two really interesting songs, one after the other. Played for a group of 10 year-olds... probably a graduation party. Sad. Weird. Iiiiinteresting.

Run D.M.C., "Tricky"

And, just a little bit of awesome... NKOTB's "Tonight."

Now you see? Why the heck would 10 year olds be listening to these songs? Why am I even putting them on the blog? Why would I admit to having that haircut?

Skip that last one. Enjoy.

70s One Hit Wonder...

Alan O'Day's "Undercover Angel." Disco, funk and pop. Damn, LSD must have been cool back then.

Really, I'm too young too know this song as well as I do... what the heck is wrong with me?!? Seriously, I think I may have been 8. Why would I have been singing this song?

Love me, love me, love me!

Of Course I'm Lying. Strange vid, but excellent song.

Yello

...Oh Yeah. Thanks to Ferris Bueller's Day Off, "Oh Yeah" is the most popular Yello song (even more than "Paranomia" and "The Art of Edit"). Sad.

Take a listen to the tune. Some of the best horn work anywhere, outside of classic swing bands.

Of course, there are also other songs, like the one presented today... "The Race" (the video cut).

And because it's actually better, the full version off the Flag album:

This song will immediately depress your accelerator on a dark highway in a fast car. Beware. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Men at Work

Digging out from the Archives comes an excellent band from Down Under. Hitting the states like a bombshell in 1982, their debut album went on to sell a crapload of albums. Two of the songs, "Who can it be Now?" and, "Down Under" enabled the band to have the #1 album in both the US and the UK during the same week, a feat never hit before from an Australian Band.

Men at Work -- "Be Good Johnny," from the album Business as Usual.

Men at Work -- "It's a Mistake," from the album Cargo.

One more, couldn't resist... the awesome "Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive."

For a final treat in the same vein, go listen to "People Just Love to Play With Words," embedded here. One of the best songs on the debut album.

Off to work I go, in the name of science, and all it's wonders.
G'Day!

Annoying Frat-Boy Music

Back then, when I went to school, FB music wasn't as irritating as today. Now, we have the pinnacle of all annoying FB Bands, Dave Matthews.

What is Frat-Boy music? Well, it's something that's pablum and palatable enough that the whole album can play through while sorority chicks come over on a Friday to drink crappy, stale beer. It just smacks of no effort.

Disclaimer: I wasn't a frat kid. I have been mistaken for one numerous times, so I stopped wearing baseball hats. I have no problem with the guys i hung around with that were in Frats, but today's generation of baseball hat wearing idiots seem to be douche-tastic.

Anyway, off the new album from DMB, here's "Funny the Way it Is." I was going to see if I liked it, so it's killing two birds with one stone. Now I don't have to purchase it on iTunes.

David Byrne. Excellent. Lots of Fetish imagery in this video. I'm not complaining, mind you. A great song to have a Mojito with.

Monday Awesome

June starts off well with Billy Idol's greatest video. "Cradle of Love" from 1990's Charmed Life. Was on the "Adventures of Ford Fairlane" soundtrack, which was an awesome movie.

I remember that myself and my roommate Brian stopped and stared transfixed at the TV for several moments after the video. He didn't move for half a day, VCR remote poised to strike, until it came on again.

Sadly, the tape broke after repeated viewings. Awesome.

Awesome is the word of the day.

Also, red wine will not come out with soap. Use soda water. Or give her one of your shirts.
