Continuing the theme of great musical numbers.... comes one of the most amazing performances on film. Donald O'Connor's solo in Singing in the Rain, "Make 'Em Laugh."
Not much can be said to make this better, so enjoy!

Didn't Sinatra Sing This?
"Seriously, didn't Sinatra sing this song first?" This is usually what I hear when I collect on one of the most lucrative bar bets I make. Marlon Brando sang this song in Guys and Dolls. Not Sinatra, who later made it much more famous.
Marlon Brando sings "Luck be a Lady." Great song, fabulous use of the greek chorus.

An Older Musical
Musicals. It used to be so much fun to escape to a nice Musical. Back when many actors had to be a triple threat -- acting, singing and dancing. Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelley, even Marlon Brando was a threat (see tomorrow)...
But today, we are seeing Danny Kaye in The Court Jester. One of the greatest musicals from the 50s.

A bit of late sunday DJ action...
A remix of OMD's "Enola Gay." As far as remixes go, this one doesn't suck.
And of course, the original...
Have an excellent Sunday.

Sadness Turns Into Happiness...
...but I feel I need a road trip. Something to clear the mind and the soul. A constant speed of over 100, the cars whipping by, the trees blurring in the wind. Horizon rushing toward my being, steering wheel one with my form.
I'd drive back for my daughter's smile. That's about it.
Blonde Redhead's "23."

Dichotomy, by Lily Allen
Lily Allen's "LDN."
...and then, "Fuck You (very much)."
In quite the supercilious mood. GD Robert Brown novel. I'm not sleeping, and I'm not enjoying it.
To those friends that are in it for themselves, for those that really don't try to understand that you are doing what you believe to be in their best interest...
Fuck you.

Shout!
Otis Day and the Knights! Well, not really, but it's from one of the greatest movies of all time, Animal House. More a documentary than an actual movie...
And as a special treat... MXPX doing "Shout!" as well.
"Wait til Otis sees us. He loves us!"

More Brit-Pop Mashup Chaos
Yaz's "Only You" remixed. I really don't know if I like it or not. I like the BPM, but not necessarily the real saccharine feel.
Oh wait. Yes, I hate it. It ends way too abruptly. Bastard.
Oh well, they can't all be home runs.

Am I Imagining This?!?
The Imagined Village (with guest singer Billy Bragg) perform "Hard Times of Old England." Gotta love good old folk songs, especially when redone with a new sound.
I almost feel like I am back in the pub.
Enjoy!

A Beastie Classic
Everyone had this bloody tape, it seemed. Possibly one of the world's best Rap groups, singing one of thier most popular beats, "Paul Revere."
I know you started rapping as soon as you figured out the song. You did you do? Boyeeee!

On a Deserted Freeway at Night...
...top down, lights in the car running dim. The beers dissipated through my body ages ago. The sea air so strong I can smell it, the feel of the sun trying to wake... but still dark. Still dark.
She broke up with me. Or, I broke up with her. Whatever, I'm pretty sure it was mutual. There wasn't anything there, just repetitious nonsense for a while now. I think I just passed Cocoa Beach, I could stay there for a few days. Surf. Sun. Beer, and a random girl or two.
"LA Woman" crackles on the radio. Faint, since the I may be just inside the station's range. I bring the car back up past 100 to get closer, faster. The feel of the wind is amazing, my hands grip the wheel harder. My wheel, my car, my soul. Miami bound now, no turning back. Gone, going.
As good old Joe goes through his acid-induced frenzy, I smile to myself. Rocketing down the freeway, I think to myself, "Life ain't bad." It isn't all that great, but it ain't bad.
And it ain't. Love this song. "LA Woman," The Doors.

Mamma Mia!
Ok, delving back into the archives for this one... the classic 4/4 beat, the light piano strains, the two part layered harmony. Excellence. As exciting as the song can be (and I know you sing it at full volume in your car, don't lie) the performers in the video seem as animated as zombies. Hysterical.
Abba! What has come from Sweden since then? Cars? Not as enduring. NuMetal? Not as catchy.

Are You Alive?
Sexy and Driving, Metric's "Help, I'm Alive" is a tune that takes one to both 80's alternative rock, enfused with today's pop performances. Catchy melody, almost like a happy Garbage.

Amy Winehouse? She's a mess.
However, this version of the bloody song was amazing. Again, from the new show Glee comes "Rehab."
It almost made me buy the actual tune. God, I love this show.

Kanye West is a Jerk
So, at the VMAs yesterday, Kanye West interrupts Taylor Swift's acceptance for winning "Best Female Video." What a complete tool.
This was the video, "You Belong to Me." It's not bad, bright, poppy country music. But it didn't deserve what Kanye did to ruin the girl's night.

Barely Man Enough?
Nope, Barry Manilow! Sunday Morning mellow. Flowing melody, great lyrics, three bridges that lift the song, the singer and the audience...
Seriously, can you sing this song without smiling? I don't think so.
"Can't Smile Without You." Because it's a Daughter/Daddy morning. I'm such a sucker.
Have a great Sunday.

One Number Bands!
Eve 6 -- "Open Road Song." The song opens with an awesome driving guitar progression. Hypnotic in it's rhythm, this tune is all about a quick, fun drive.
Lastly, for this friday, we have Stroke 9's "Washin' and wonderin'." Almost the same guitar progression, but a much more catchy tune. Pretty cool.
Happy Friday, Boys and Girls! Enjoy the weekend.

Rufus King and Teen Titans
Continuing the soundtrack theme this week... Rufus King does "Just what I Need." From the movie Bring it On. Cheerleaders, and Eliza Dushku? Yes, please.
Trendy pop tune, but catchy. Also, like the integration with Team Titans Robin and Starfire. Kinda cute.

Brand New Buble!
From the new Album Crazy Love, releasing Oct 9th.
"Haven't Met You Yet." Pretty standard vocal arrangement, bright and cheery. 4/4 rock beat, nothing out of the ordinary. Big use of the big band sound... and the bridge is actually one of the better parts of the song.
However, solid. Have no complaints. Makes me enjoy even a back-to-work Tuesday.

Take me Home!
Ok, Monday Labor Day. Something happened this day, but I don't know what. So, what do we do, when the beer has all been draught, and the spirits have all dissipated?
We crank up the Gimme Gimmes.
John Denver's "Country Roads." Just because, I hear that he died around this time.
And since it's a special Monday, and I probably won't have any more MFATGGs this year... "O Sole Mio."
Happy Labor Day! Get drunk and laid at your lesiure. You need to, it's the last 3 day weekend of the year (unless you are getting reamed at Thanksgiving, in which I would suggest you take off tomorrow).

From History of the World Part 1, Mel Brook's "The Spanish Inquisition." We must be having a musical theme this week. Excellent.

Glee!
Aaah, a show about high school glee club. I cannot wait. The performances are nuanced, the orchestrations are very, very good, and the songs picked are pretty cool.
"Don't Stop Believin'"
And for those of you that come back, here's a late breaking addition...
"Can't Fight this Feeling," from Glee. I may be able to die happy, if this show is this good.

The Most Disturbing Videos...
Comes from the movie Joe's Apartment. Underrated and hated by critics, this movie had to be one of the best musicals in a long time. I wish I could share with you all the theme, which has one of the most melodic burps in any genre.
"Won't you be my Bug?"
"Funky Towel." Not safe for stomach.
Happy Friday, Y'all.

Really, no Beatles Yet?
How could that have happened? I have 2 mashups, and one cover, but no actual song from the Beatles?
Well, let's change that. A Lennon/McCartney track (that should be McCartney/Lennon) that is probably one of the most iconic songs from the band. Boys and Girls, here is "Hey Jude." Enjoy.
Additionally, Beatles Rock Band is coming out on 9/9. Gotta get in line for that.
