A Summer Song

I was asked to actually put up a summer song, to see if I was alive.

Before I do, let me tell you a little bit of why I like Buffett. During my last year of Military service, I was deployed to Guantanamo Bay to do taxes for all the on-base personnel. Not necessarily the most glamorous of positions, but I had an air conditioned office and all the $5 gallons of Bacardi a soldier could buy. Of course, the music I could take was limited. This was well before MP3s and iPods, so i was kinda screwed.

My girlfriend at the time and I were on the "on again" portion of a 3 year long distance relationship (they never work, but still, it was fun and a little secure knowing I didn't have to try that hard with other girls, but anyway...), and she was sending care packages pretty randomly, but often enough to know that she was thinking of me. One of the first care packages had a mix tape in it, with Jimmy Buffett's "Stars Fell On Alabama." A cute, little ditty, with harmonica, piano and a mandolin as the featured instruments (a classic standard, btw).

Of course, I played that tape every day, at least twice. I still have it, even if I don't have a functioning cassette player any more. I like the song, even though I don't talk to the girl any more. Jimmy Buffett got me through Gitmo, and once I returned to the states, I bought every CD he puts out. Because, every once in a while when I listen to a Buffett tune, I'm back on that still-hot-from-the-sun beach, looking up at the darkening sky, seeing the stars, thinking about a lovely time with a lovely girl.
